Placement Year Bursary
The Placement Year Bursary is available to students from low-income households and independent students who are completing a placement year as part of their course.

The Placement Year financial award is an alternative support package for a year when you are doing a placement year as part of your course. This payment is instead of The Manchester Bursary and you will be automatically assessed for the award based on your Student Finance financial assessment, so you just need to make sure you apply for a financial assessment for that academic year.
The amount you receive, is dependent upon your household income assessment.
Residual household income of up to £25,000: £2,000 cash award
Residual household income of between £25,001-£35,000: £1,000 cash award
Scheme eligibility
Essential criteria are criteria you must meet to be considered for this scheme. Students who do not meet this criteria will not be considered for this award. The essential criteria for this scheme are as follows:
- You must be studying an eligible undergraduate degree course at the University of Manchester
- You must have submitted an application to your regional student funding authority (Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Scotland), had a full household income assessment, and consented to share your Student Finance information with your university
- You must have a household income of less than £35,000 per year.
Application and selection process
How to apply
The University will do an automatic assessment for the Bursary in the first 6-8 weeks of semester 1 and will email you in November if you are eligible for the award. You do not need to apply or provide any further information to us.
If you are not contacted by December and think you are eligible for a bursary please email our team via the online enquiry form.
If your household income should fall by 15% or more in an academic year you may be able to apply for an in year reassessment with Student Finance to reassess your household income and thus your eligibility for the bursary.

Sharing your household income information
When completing your Student Finance England Application, you will need to ensure you have selected the option to consent to share your household income information with the Universities you have applied to or hold an offer with. Without this we cannot access that information, and we will not be able to consider your application for this scheme.
