Article 26 Scholarship
The Article 26 Scholarship supports students with sanctuary and other asylum related statuses access financial support for living cost and tuition fees.

The Article 26 Scholarship supports students with sanctuary and other asylum related statuses access financial support for living cost and tuition fees.
It recognises that these students are not eligible for Student Finance England funding to help with tuition and maintenance costs and seeks to provide a financial lifeline to talented students who would otherwise struggle to progress into higher education.
Successful award recipients will receive a tuition fee waiver, a cash award of £5000 each academic year, and an accommodation waiver if they are living in specific University of Manchester accommodation. They will also be provided with a named contact at the University to go to for support and be invited to social and development opportunities with other Article 26 scholars.
We are unable to award this scholarship to students studying Medicine, Dentistry or Architecture courses.
Scheme eligibility
Essential criteria are criteria you must meet to be considered for this scheme. Students who do not meet this criteria will not be considered for this award. The essential criteria for this scheme are as follows:
- You must have applied to The University of Manchester for a place on a course starting in September 2026 (you don’t need to have received a course offer in order to submit your application, but we will look at which applicants have been made an offer when shortlisting for the scholarship interviews).
- You must be unable to access mainstream funding (such as student finance loans)
- You must meet specific immigration criteria relating to Sanctuary Scholarships
Applicants must note that eligibility can change at any point based on changes to government or institutional policy in relation to immigration.
Application and selection process
How to apply
Students must complete the application form and provide any evidence requested. As part of your application you will also need to provide supporting statement - this is your chance to provide further detail as to how the bursary will help you.
You will also have to provide evidence of your immigration status. Our admissions and visa teams will also use your government and UCAS held information to assess your eligibility.
Terms and conditions
Sharing your household income information
When completing your Student Finance England Application, you will need to ensure you have selected the option to consent to share your household income information with the Universities you have applied to or hold an offer with. Without this we cannot access that information, and we will not be able to consider your application for this scheme.
Breaks in funding
This award is not provided during study years abroad, placement years, or if a student takes a study interruption.
Your course offer and this scheme
Receipt of this award is subject to you meeting you course offer commitments and registering at the University of Manchester in the year of entry specified in the application form.
Engaging with donors
This scheme is generously supported by a donor. Successful applicants will be expected to provide regular updates on their progress to the donor and meet with them as part of the terms and conditions of receiving the award.
