The Turing Scheme provides a contribution towards living costs for students completing a work placement in a different country. The contribution is calculated based on the host country and duration of the placement.

Countries are categorised as either a 'group 1' or 'group 2' country. You can see which group your destination country is in by referring to the Turing Scheme webpages on the gov.uk website: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/turing-scheme-international-placements-2025-to-2026/turing-scheme-list-of-destinations-and-grant-rates-2025-to-2026

Please find the living cost funding amounts for 2026/27 below for students with a household income of £43,000 and under:

- Placement lasts between 14 and 56 days in a group 1 country: £23 per day

- Placement lasts between 14 and 56 days in a group 2 country: £21 per day

- Placement lasts over 56 days in a group 1 country: £18 per day

- Placement lasts over 56 days in a group 2 country: £16 per day

Students with a household income of £43,000 and under, who are participating in an eligible summer or short-term programme are eligible for extra Turing Scheme funding to support with their travel costs. The Turing Scheme travel costs funding is not available to semester and full year placements.

There is a maximum allowance based on the country you are going to. You can see what the maximum amount of travel funding you can claim is by looking up your host country on the Turing Scheme gov.uk webpage: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/turing-scheme-international-placements-2025-to-2026/turing-scheme-list-of-destinations-and-grant-rates-2025-to-2026

You will need to complete a declaration form confirming you will not claim your travel costs from any other source (such as the Student Finance Travel Grant) before these funds can be paid. You will then receive an advance payment of the maximum allowance. You must then provide receipts of your travel bookings as soon as you make them. If your travel receipts total less than the maximum allowance, you will need to repay the difference.

Scheme eligibility

Essential criteria are criteria you must meet to be considered for this scheme. Students who do not meet this criteria will not be considered for this award. The essential criteria for this scheme are as follows:

To be eligible for funding, a placement must:

  • be a minimum of 14 days long (excluding travel days to/from the placement);
  • be approved and supported by The University of Manchester;
  • be part of your programme of study or an eligible summer placement*;
  • not be taking place in your country of domicile.

To be eligible for Turing Scheme funding, students must:

  • be a fully-registered undergraduate of the University;
  • have ‘Home’ fee status;
  • have a household income of £43,000 or less (based on your means-tested assessment through Student Finance in either 25/26 or 26/27, where this data has been released to the University).

Due to the level of funding we receive, there are some limits as to how many placements you can receive Turing for. This is to ensure as many students as possible are able to have at least one international experience during their studies. Eligible students are able to receive Turing funding for:

  • any international placement(s) that form part of their degree AND
  • a place on the Team Rwanda international volunteering programme AND
  • a maximum of one summer school during their degree

Selection process

When an application for a placement is approved in the My Placement system, an eligibility assessment is automatically conducted. This includes checking means testing information from Student Finance. Eligible students will then be contacted with further information and guidance on grant rates and paperwork. If you believe you are eligible based on the above criteria, and have not been contacted, please email us so we can double check this for you.

Sharing your household income information

When completing your Student Finance England Application, you will need to ensure you have selected the option to consent to share your household income information with the Universities you have applied to or hold an offer with. Without this we cannot access that information, and we will not be able to consider your application for this scheme.
