Overview

Students will conduct a piece of empirical research that either addresses a specific research question in the field of clinical biochemistry or involves the development and evaluation of new or exciting analytical technologies. Each student will either complete a laboratory based research project in a NHS or university laboratory, or will complete an audit or extended literature review within the same time period. Students completing a laboratory project will spend 10 weeks full-time in the laboratory undertaking research and then producing a dissertation. The students will be required to undertake a literature review relevant to the project, which will be written up and form the introduction to the dissertation. The dissertation will also contain a clear and informed description of the methodologies employed and presentation and analysis of the data generated along with a logical, scientifically valid and robust discussion of the findings. Those completing an extended literature review will be required to undertake a thorough, systematic, critical appraisal of the scientific literature related to the subject.

Aims

The unit aims to:

  • Provide students with a unique experience of designing, conducting and reporting an independent, original research project
  • Develop the students’ ability to critically appraise published research, formulate and work with a relevant research question, understand and apply appropriate research and data-analysis methodologies
  • Refine scientific writing and presentation skills.
