Overview
This unit will consist of a number of practical workshops that will provide practical experience of core biochemistry and clinical biochemistry scenarios. Students will be introduced to health and safety considerations of laboratory work and basic laboratory techniques including enzymatic assays and enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Patient samples will be analysed in a number of practical workshops, with students being asked to provide clinical interpretation of the results. Students will also develop an understanding of laboratory calculations and data analysis. Students will learn to apply the theoretical knowledge obtained from their analytical methods unit in the interpretation of data from a method verification study.

The unit aims to:
- Equip students with the theoretical understanding and practical skills relating to laboratory based biochemical techniques to enable them to undertake experimental research in medical biochemistry.
