We examine the importance of international business, laying the foundations for the study of international management. All aspects of working in overseas markets are examined, including strategy formation and implementation with emphasis on the role and importance of cross-cultural and socially responsible management.


The unit aims to:

Introduce students to the basics of international management, with particular reference to cross-cultural management, and management within organisations that operate in developing countries

On successful completion of this course unit, participants will have demonstrated:·

Knowledge and critical understanding of the nature and context of management in international development,

Knowledge and critical understanding of strategic, resource and other international management practices,·

Knowledge and critical understanding of international development organisations’ environment and how it impacts on their effectiveness.

Understand theoretical background, and undertake a comparative analysis of the ways in which managers can make use of management theory in solving practical problems associated with cross-cultural management focus.

Teaching and learning methods

Learning and teaching are generally handled in a face-to-face forum, as students benefit from sharing ideas and experiences with people from different cultural backgrounds.  However, E-learning is used to enhance the student experience, offering opportunities for interaction in different media environments.

Feedback methods

FROM students.

Students will be given opportunities to provide feedback to teaching staff during face to face sessions, and via Padlet and other polling tools- as well as via the formal Unit Evaluation. There will also be opportunities for peer- peer feedback during sessions.

Detailed summative assessment will be via Blackboard.
