Overview
This unit is a design-focused unit, which will be completed in the form of a structural design project. The project seeks to take students through the design process; from receiving the brief through to technical design whilst encouraging innovation and creativity.
Aims
To gain practice in whole structure design from concept to detailed design.
To apply existing knowledge and understanding of structural design and analysis to an open ended and challenging design problem.
Syllabus
The unit will bring together previously gained knowledge and put into practice that knowledge within the design process. The unit will focus on application of fundamental structural principles in the derivation of a safe and viable structural solution for a whole building structure. Design will be completed alongside a variety of learning resources that will help student’s address a structural engineering design problem. Through feedback and informally at tutorials the design will be steered incrementally towards a design result that can be achieved by independent group working.
The design stages will loosely follow the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) plan of work and will include the below:
• Interpretation of the brief and assessing the feasibility of the project, deriving varying structural concepts
• Derivation of 2 distinct and viable scheme solutions for the same structure
• Review of scheme solutions to determine most appropriate solution
• Development of chosen solution to a detailed design suitable for outline costing
The module is 100% coursework. The unit is a total of 15 credits out of a total of 180 for the course.
Each credit is worth approximately 5 hours of study
