Overview
Under supervision students will carry out a piece of research either laboratory or clinically based. This will involve collecting new information/data or biological/environmental samples or e.g. examining the effectiveness of an intervention. Analysing the collected data using appropriate statistical tests and then interpreting the findings in context of the published literature.
The findings will be presented in a report. The study will address a specific research question in the area of clinical immunology. The report will consist of an introduction, a clear description of methods and presentation and analysis of data and logical interpretation and discussion of the findings. The report will be appropriately referenced and will be formatted and presented according to guidelines given in the handbook.
At a Masters level, the report needs to demonstrate that the student can understand how existing evidence/information relates to a particular question, and how their own work adds to this. Independent thinking is required with an ability to critique ones own work and that of others. Students need to be aware of the implications of their work and defend the findings presented in the dissertation.
The research project proposal from Research Project 1 Unit and the report for the Research Project 2 Unit will be bound together to form a final dissertation for the MSc Clinical Immunology.

The aim of this unit is to develop the student’s critical faculties in research including:

Teaching and learning methods
Regular individual or small group meetings with a nominated project supervisor, guided reading and focused skills support. Progress will be monitored and regular feedback provided.
