Overview
- Medical gas production and quality control, chemical and physical properties and the safety requirements.
- Medical gas systems pipe-work and plant structure and basic principles of operation.
- The permit to work and the role of the QC MGPS.
- Principles and procedures of MGPS QC testing.
- Calibration and the use of testing equipment to test medical systems.
- Problem solving and coping with emergencies.
- Record keeping, report on the suitability of the system for supplying medical gases and permits to work.
- National legal requirements and regulations.
- Advise on the extent of QC testing pertinent to engineering work on a medical gas pipe-line system.
Aims
This unit develops the student’s knowledge of medical gas systems including the structure and components of the relevant COSHH and Health and Safety regulations required to practice in this field.
The unit will provide an in-depth working knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of testing for contaminants in medical gas systems, with particular reference to the role of the Medical Gas expert in patient safety and care.
Teaching and learning methods
- One-week teaching block including workshops and practicals.The teaching component is provided by Leeds CPD, Faculty of Engineering and is delivered by experts in their field.
- E-learning: evidence-based learning supported by course notes, audio lectures and discussion boards.
Knowledge and understanding
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of relevant pharmacopoeial monographs, HTM 02 and permit to work relating to medical gases.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of health and safety relating to medical gases.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of medical gases production and properties, and the application of GMP to medical gas production.
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of medical gas testing equipment including the calibration, maintenance and use in patient care.
- Interpret test results of medical gas systems and take appropriate actions.
- Critically evaluate working practices and apply national standards.
- Evaluate and advise on the safe use and management of medical gases and medical gas cylinders.
