Overview

A series of masterclasses, delivered by internationally recognised experts in their field on the principles of oncology and its translation into clinical practice, to provide a multidisciplinary foundation in the key issues related to oncology. The classes include discussion on new developments and emerging concepts and technologies in this rapidly developing area.

Aims

To provide students with an understanding of the multidisciplinary practice of oncology.

Learning outcomes

Student will be able to:

  • understand how cancer is diagnosed;
  • understand the principles of cancer surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy;
  • gain knowledge of the use and role of other therapies for the treatment of cancer: hormonal therapy, biological therapy, complimentary medicine;
  • understand the cancer patient journey from primary to palliative care.

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching method will consist of the assigned speaker giving a comprehensive overview of their area of expertise, followed by a review using specific examples and group discussion on the different aspects of the subject covered. Students will gain knowledge of the area and be able to examine and debate the area to develop critical thinking.

The assessments will allow students to develop their academic writing skills.

2 x 3000 word written essays

Feedback to the students for each essay will be in the form of written feedback via Blackboard.
