Course overview

With our Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited degree, you’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of real estate in society, business and to the end-user.

The impact of globalisation and sustainability on real estate practice is also reflected throughout the course, with opportunities to examine legal and regulatory frameworks and property markets on an international basis.

We expect that students will be required to spend a minimum of 20 study hours a week for this MSc.

Who is this course for?

This is a fast-track conversion course, specifically for those who would like more real estate knowledge to apply to their place of work, or who want a change of career into the real estate sector.

Where will it take me?

Successful graduates take a leading role in addressing the challenges facing the real estate industry. They have gone on to successful careers for top employers in areas including environmental management and consultancy, urban planning and design, real estate development, urban and regional development policy, central and local government, international development and energy and water.

Blended learning

MSc Real Estate is a blended learning programme. Course content is delivered online using web-enabled technology systems. You’ll have the opportunity to meet academics who teach the course, engage with the course materials and network with your peers alongside face-to-face, three-day workshops hosted twice a year in Manchester.

  • Understand fundamentals of real estate
  • Explore geographical and sector markets
  • Study how macroeconomics shapes property cycles

  • Introduce principle methods of property valuation
  • Explore the mathematical application of different methods of valuation
  • Critically examine the physical, legal and economic factors

Planning for future cities

  • Explore the principles, nature and practice of planning systems and processes around the world
  • Understand emerging future trends in urban development in global cities
  • Examine the notion of the future ‘smart’ city in a global context

Land and development

  • Develop an understanding of land use policies and making the best use of land resources
  • Practical experience and understanding of the development process through real life development sites
  • Develop an understanding of the financial issues and risks involved in development schemes

Real estate investment and finance

  • Explore the principles of investment and the creation of value
  • Critically evaluate direct and indirect methods of investing in real estate
  • Demonstrate approaches used in financing of funds and individual projects

Strategic asset management

  • Introduce the principles of strategic asset management
  • Explore the tactics used to pro-actively manage real estate assets
  • Topics include performance metrics, risk management and sustainability and responsible property investment

Project based enquiry

  • An opportunity to plan, manage and conduct practice-based research on a topic related to the course
  • Develop knowledge and competency in an appropriate range of research methods including the development of a focal question or hypothesis
  • Develop experience of developing and managing a specific research project through to final submission

Elective units (choose one of three options)

Real estate law in practice

  • Nature of law and law of contract
  • How leases and other contracts are created, operated and terminated, including service of notice
  • Propery law, land tenure, third party rights and conflict avoidance

Real estate modelling

  • To provide a rigorous exposition of relevant analytical and quantitative tools
  • Provide a good grounding in statistics and modern econometric techniques
  • Running multivariate techniques using spss

3

Corporate real estate project

  • Consider how organisations develop and implement strategic objectives
  • Apply relevant concepts and techniques to solve problems in a project environment
  • Facilitate a detailed exploration of the development of business focussed real estate strategies

We recognise it has been a difficult year and the 10% early application discount has been extended until 08th January. We look forward to receiving your application.

Alumni Loyalty Bursary (15% discount) If you have successfully graduated from a credit-bearing qualification at the University of Manchester or UMIST you can receive an alumni loyalty bursary, which is a 15% discount on the tuition fees that you are personally funding

One-discount policy:   We operate a one discount policy; Early Application and Alumni Loyalty Bursary are not accumulative. If you qualify for more than one discount or scholarship, you will be awarded the one that is the highest amount. 

For courses starting in late February, applications will close in early February.

For courses starting in September, applications will close at the mid-end of August.

15% Alumni Loyalty Bursary : If you have successfully graduated from The University of Manchester, you can receive a 15% alumni discount (£2,325)

10% Early Application discount : We've extended our 10% early application discount deadline to 8th Jan 2021, giving you more time to gather all the necessary documents to complete your application. You can save £1,550 on your tuition fees when you apply early.

The fees quoted above will be fully inclusive for the course tuition, administration and computational costs during your studies.

All fees for entry will be subject to yearly review and incremental rises per annum are also likely over the duration of courses lasting more than a year for UK/EU students (fees are typically fixed for international students, for the course duration at the year of entry). Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application.
