Overview

This module compliments Independent Theoretical and Ethnographic Analysis I and the two would normally be taken together in order to encompass the amount of literature that is normally involved in preparing for a PhD-level research project. However, the work has been divided into two modules to allow a student to take an existing postgraduate-level specialist option in a substansive topic in Social Anthropology if this option and the reading that would be covered in it are directly relevant to the student's research topic.

Aims

FOR MA ANTHROPOLOGICAL RESEARCH STUDENTS ONLY

To equip the student with a thorough knowledge of the regional literature in anthropology (and related disciplines), in the context of a broader comparative literature, and of the relevant social and cultural theory related to the research project s/he intends to carry out in subsequent years.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module, the student will be able to assess critically the major theoretical perspectives relating to his/her research question and assess thoroughly, in the light of existing ethnographic work on a given region and beyond that region, what significant contributions might be made to the field of study.
