We strongly recommend that you make contact with your proposed supervisor before submitting an application.

  • Include your research title
  • Explain the importance of your research in the context of current knowledge
  • Clearly identify the objectives of the research
  • Explain the methodology to be employed
  • Demonstrate that you have the appropriate abilities to conduct the research
  • Literature review (an indication of the kind of books you will need to read and review as part of the research)

Once we have received this documentation, your application will be reviewed.

Advice to applicants

If your qualifications meet our academic entry requirements, your application material will then be sent to your potential supervisor for consideration.

If the academic supervisor is interested in supervising your research, they will then contact you to arrange an interview to further discuss and develop your application. Interviews may be in person or by Skype or telephone. A decision can then be made about whether the supervisor wishes to make you an offer of a place on the programme.

If your application is successful at this stage, we can then issue a formal offer letter and request any additional documentation that is required for entry onto the programme, including:

  • English Language qualification (if applicable) - IELTS greater than or equal to 6.5 (with no sub-test below 5.5).
  • Two letters of reference provided by people who have knowledge of your academic ability. You must ensure that reference letters are written on official letter headed paper and are signed and dated by the referee (reference letters older than 1 year will not be accepted).

Further documentation may be required relating to funding applications. The stages and documentation differ between funding schemes and so this information will be provided following consideration of your application.
