Overview
The practical nature of chemical engineering makes any industrial experience gathered whilst studying an invaluable asset. In the MEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience course students spend a year in industry, allowing them to gain significant industrial experience, developing advanced depth, breadth and practice in chemical engineering, as well as soft and transferable skills. The degree programme complies with the requirements for MEng accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. The accredited MEng with IE course has the following additional features;
i) advanced depth in chemical engineering (deeper penetration of knowledge and understanding than has previously been acquired in the degree programme)
ii) advanced breadth in chemical engineering (exposure to topics additional to those that would normally be considered as core chemical engineering)
iii) advanced chemical engineering practice (application of chemical engineering techniques and, if possible, innovative design).
As part of their industrial placement students prepare an oral presentation, covering a selected part of the technical work carried out during the placement. The work needs to be carefully selected to give a good overview of the placement and also allow for sufficient depth of discussion. The technical presentation should contain an appropriate level of technical detail and be visually attractive. Presentations are given as part of the second site visit, to both the Academic and Industrial Placement Supervisors. The supervisors assess the presentation and will ask specific questions to probe the students’ technical understanding as part of the post presentation Q&A.
Aims
The unit aims to enable students to;
i) carry out technical engineering work whilst on industrial placement
ii) develop awareness of aspects of intellectual property and confidentiality in relation to the placement work
iii) demonstrate their ability to communicate technical/industrial work in a clear and precise manner
iv) defend their own work in a question and answer session during its assessment
Learning outcomes
- Select suitable technical work carried out during the industrial placement to present in an oral presentation.
- Prepare a technical presentation and its content using appropriate software
- Present technical work in a logical and visually effective manner
- Defend technical work with confidence against questions asked by the assessors
Teaching and learning methods
The course structure and full guidance for each component are available on the IE Blackboard page where a discussion group monitored by the module leader is also available. Direct interaction with industrial and academic placement supervisors occurs during the placement year, during which guidance and feedback is provided.
