Overview

The practical nature of chemical engineering makes any industrial experience gathered whilst studying an invaluable asset.  The MEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience course complies with the requirements for MEng accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers.  The accredited MEng course must include everything currently covered by a BEng, but with the following additional features:

i.          advanced depth in chemical engineering (deeper penetration of knowledge and understanding than has previously been acquired in the degree programme)

ii.          advanced breadth in chemical engineering (exposure to topics additional to those that would normally be considered as core chemical engineering)

iii.         advanced chemical engineering practice (application of chemical engineering techniques and, if possible, innovative design).

The prime function of the skills portfolio is to demonstrate that the industrial experience year has fulfilled the requirements of a MEng degree. This report provides evidence of the advanced technical and transferable skills acquired during the industrial experience year.

The Skills Portfolio is expected to be a 20-30 page document, outlining advanced technical and transferable skills developed during the placement. For each of these skills, the student is expected to provide a brief description of the skill developed (including relevant theory or background information) and an example illustrating the application of the skills during the placement. In addition to the report, students should include as an appendix the IChemE Competence and Commitment Report. Some aspects of the skills developed are expected to be used in this report, and preparing the main text of the Skills Portfolio should help you to identify the most relevant examples for the Competence and Commitment Report.

For further information about how to complete the Competence and Commitment report you can visit http://www.getchartered.org/. You are advised to become an IChemE student member during your industrial placement. Student members of the Institution will have received details of the format and content for this in their membership package.

Aims

The unit aims to:

Develop the student’s ability to reflect on the skills acquired during the placement. By the end of the placement the student should (depending on the nature of the industrial experience) be able to:

• Demonstrate experience and development of advanced chemical engineering knowledge (depth and breadth) in an industrial environment (technical skills)

• Demonstrate acquiring relevant transferable skills.

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

ILO 1: Identify relevant technical skills acquired during the industrial placement.

ILO 2: Identify relevant transferable skills during acquired the industrial placement.

ILO 3: Set the skills acquired in the context of the industrial placement and explain how these relate to previous learning.

Teaching and learning methods

Students have learning material available in Blackboard, as well as a discussion group monitored by the module leader.  Direct interactions with industrial supervisors and academic placement supervisors occur during the placement year during which guidance and feedback is provided.
