Overview
This course is designed to consolidate students’ level of competency, not only with the use of complex grammatical structures in the French language but also by offering a wider range of sophisticated written and aural texts on both concrete and abstract topics including articles and reports concerned with contemporary issues.
Students will gain effective operation proficiency in both the ability to appreciate and use nuanced language at this level including via tone, register, structure and style in oral and written communication, and also the ability to interact and negotiate orally in complex situations.
Pre/co-requisites
- Pre-requisite: Successful completion of LEAP French 4 or equivalent e.g. A level French grade 6 or above.
- Co-requisite: If you are studying a Modern Languages Degree, either single or joint honours, please refer to relevant guidance about eligibility for LEAP units on your programme structure.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- understand extended speech, lectures, films and TV programmes without too much effort;
- understand long and complex texts and specialised articles in a different field from one's own;
- interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and take an active part in discussion;
- give a presentation on a reasonably complex subject;
- write letters, reports and essays in a clear and well structured way, tailoring the style appropriately.
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level B2+/C1 of the Common European Framework.
Teaching and learning methods
One three-hour seminar per week, delivered through blended learning which integrates on campus and on-line instruction as necessary. This will also include online digital learning available via Blackboard and supplemented by extra online resources to aid students in their independent learning.

- formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
