Fees and funding

Fees

Tuition fees for home students commencing their studies in September 2025 will be £9,535 per annum (subject to Parliamentary approval). Tuition fees for international students will be £34,000 per annum. For general information please see the undergraduate finance pages.

Additional expenses

There is a compulsory field course for Civil Engineering students which incurs a subsidised fee* (approx. £100) that contributes to travel, accommodation and subsistence. You are expected to bring your own wet weather clothing and footwear.

The exact cost and dates of the trip are confirmed at the start of your second year.

* In accordance with current University policy, this fee is restricted to be not more than 1% of the annual tuition fee of the course

Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Further information can be found in the University's Policy on additional costs incurred by students on undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes (PDF document, 91KB).

Scholarships/sponsorships

The University of Manchester is committed to attracting and supporting the very best students. We have a focus on nurturing talent and ability and we want to make sure that you have the opportunity to study here, regardless of your financial circumstances.

For information about scholarships and bursaries please see our undergraduate fees pages and check the Department's funding pages .

Overview

This course is compulsory to year 4 students on all programmes except Civil & Structural Engineering. This course is composed of a group design project part and a taught part. Building on the students’ knowledge of fundamental hydraulics principles, geotechnical analysis and design, and structural analysis and structural member design, this course uses the group design of an offshore wind turbine structure to enable students to gain experience in integrated structural / foundation / hydraulics design. The taught part of the course enables the students to develop a thorough understanding of some of the important factors affecting scheme design of structures, foundations and hydraulics systems.

Pre/co-requisites

Unit title Unit code Requirement type Description
Structures 3 (Civil) CIVL33001 Pre-Requisite Compulsory
Hydraulics 3 CIVL34001 Pre-Requisite Compulsory
Geotechnics 4 CIVL36002 Pre-Requisite Compulsory
Steel & Concrete Structures CIVL20322 Pre-Requisite Compulsory

Aims

To develop students’ design skills through an integrated structural / foundation / hydraulics group design project.  To equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding to apply Eurocodes to a range of civil engineering design problems.

Syllabus

Material for offshore wind turbine design:
- Extreme environmental loading on offshore structures, use of DNV code
- Structural design options and basic calculations for turbine column and support structure
- Geotechncial options (piles, anchors, gravity bases etc)

Three group reports (one for each of the above areas) followed by a final short presentation (with supporting handout) covering the above topics and also broader construction and maintenance issues.

Design to Eurocodes
- Basis of design (understanding how to interpret and use Eurocodes)
- Geotechnics
- Structures
- Wind loading
In all cases learning how to apply Eurocodes to example civil engineering design problems, tested by an unseen exam.

Assessment methods

Method Weight
Written exam 50%
Report 37.5%
Oral assessment/presentation 12.5%

Feedback methods

Feedback will be provided through a number of methods:
(1) specific comments on individual group reports;
(2) a collective list of mistakes made in coursework will be prepared and posted on blackboard;
(3) students are welcome to ask lecturers before and after a lecture; students are also welcome to make arrangement to ask lecturers at other times;
(4) students can ask lecturers questions by email, but it is preferable to use Blackboard so that questions and answers can be seen by all students;
(5) additional tutorial sessions will be arranged to help with coursework and to help with preparation for examination.
