BA English Literature with Creative Writing / Course details

This course gives Creative Writing pathway students the opportunity to formulate and develop an extended creative project in either poetry or prose. They are also required to produce an annotated bibliography, situating their project’s themes and techniques in relation to work by other writers, relevant scholarship, and essays on craft.  

The aims of this course are: 

• To enable students to develop an extended creative project, working independently with support from a supervisor;   

• To enable students to develop an understanding of creative practice as research, and to meet the demands of producing an extended piece of fiction / collection of poems;   

• To develop the personal skills involved in defining, undertaking and completing a project   

• To encourage students to situate their creative work in relation to other writers, or to relevant critical or theoretical concerns;   

• To develop students' writing skills by encouraging them to think about the demands of an extended piece of written work.   

Three personal supervision meetings during Semester 2, and a workshop.  

• Independence and resourcefulness in ability to formulate and develop a creative project based on a student’s own interests;   

• The ability to identify and utilize relevant material, whether creative and critical, in relation to that project;  

• The formal and intellectual skills requisite to the production of an extended piece of work;   

• An ability to undertake and complete an extended individual project. 

By the end of this course, students should be able to: 

- critically evaluate literary and critical sources in relation to their own topic; 

- reflect on and articulate the significance of the techniques and formal choices deployed in the creative work. 

By the end of this course, students should be able to: 

- plan and execute independent creative research;   

- make good use of library, electronic, and online resources pertaining to their project. 

By the end of this course, students should be able to: 

 -retrieve, sift, organise, synthesise and critically evaluate material from a range of different sources, including library, electronic, and online resources; 

- manage time effectively by scheduling tasks in order of importance.
