Overview

The unit aims to:
To develop an understanding of the production, scattering, reflecting, polarisation, interference and diffraction of electromagnetic waves.

Pre/co-requisites

Unit title Unit code Requirement type Description
Electromagnetism PHYS20141 Pre-Requisite Compulsory

Aims

The unit aims to:
To develop an understanding of the production, scattering, reflecting, polarisation, interference and diffraction of electromagnetic waves.

Learning outcomes

ILO 1 demonstrate an understanding of how accelerated charges produce electromagnetic radiation.
ILO 2 show how waves are propagated in dielectrics and conductors.
ILO 3 demonstrate an understanding of the reflection and refraction of waves at boundaries; and the scattering of waves by free and bound electrons.
ILO 4 Analyse simple examples of interference and diffraction phenomena.
ILO 5 Explain the principles of representation and manipulation of polarized light.

Teaching and learning methods

Lecture notes and additional material (slides, homework, problems and answers, web links etc) will be provided on the Blackboard page of the module before the in-person lectures.
ILOs will be delivered during the in-person lectures.

Assessment methods
