Overview
General Physics Skills
Pre/co-requisites
The pre-requisites are all first and second year core except PHYS10191. Additionally, students must have have taken either PHYS30101 or 30201.
Aims
Provide students with the skill set necessary to answer questions in general and applied physics particularly where the questions cross boundaries between the traditional physics domains of Classical and Quantum Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Statistical and Thermal Physics, Waves and Optics, Subatomic Physics and Astronomy, etc.
Develop group-working skills and build confidence in real-world problem solving.
Develop the ability to solve problems numerically.
Learning outcomes
Analyse real-word physics problems and determine which area(s) of physics are most relevant particularly where problems cross boundaries between traditional disciplines.
Make suitable order-of-magnitude approximations and use these to determine the approach to problem solving.
Apply numerical or computational approaches to find a solution to a real-world problem.
Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, in-course reading, in-course assignment, examination.
Piazza discussion board and online materials from core course units.
