Overview

This unit will cover the following:

(1)  Fundamental concepts

(2)  Ideal linear op-amp circuits, such as inverting amplifier, non-inverting amplifier, summing amplifier, instrumentation amplifier, Wheatstone bridge,

(3)  Phase-sensitive demodulation (lab)

(4) Non-ideal linear op-amp circuits

(4) Static limitations of op-amps, such as bias current, offset current, offset voltage

(5) Dynamic limitations or frequency response of op-amps

(6) Filters, such as low-pass (including 2nd order Butterworth low-pass), high-pass, band-pass, notch and all-pass filters

(7) Non-linear circuits, such as rectifier, phase-sensitive demodulator

(8)Digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), such as ladder network

(9) Analogue-to-digital converter (ADC), such as dual-ramp, successive approximation

Aims

The course unit aims to: To understand fundamental electronic circuits for engineering applications. To gain ability of analysing and designing electronic circuits. To gain practical skills by building and testing electronic circuits in lab, using real electronic components.

Learning outcomes

ILO 1 - Assemble electronic circuits using real components.

ILO 2 - Apply analytical approaches to simple linear and non-linear circuits.

ILO 3 - Analyse common analogue circuit diagrams to identify and interpret circuit behaviours in time and frequency domains.

ILO 4 - Produce circuit designs for a given specification and Select component types and values in common circuit configurations.

ILO 5 - Model circuit using simulation software packages.

ILO 6 - Test electronic circuits on bread-board and analyse the measurement results from the circuits.

Coursework:

Two laboratory sessions

Laboratory duration: 6 hours

Each lab session is assessed by 2% attendance and 2% performance

All students must attend all lab sessions. Otherwise, their report will not be marked.

Laboratory assessments are weighted 20%
