Credit rating | 10 |
Unit level | Level 1 |
Teaching period(s) | Semester 1 |
Available as a free choice unit? | No |
Overview
Students will learn the fundamental skills of electronic hardware development through the construction of a microcontroller interface input/output board, which is used in subsequent units. They will learn how to design, fabricate and construct printed circuit boards (PCBs), then how to test them and conduct fault-finding. Students will learn how to solder, do basic mechanical construction, use industry standard CAD software (Altium PCB CAD and SolidWorks mechanical CAD) and bench-top test equipment.
Pre/co-requisites
Unit title | Unit code | Requirement type | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Electronic Materials | EEEN10021 | Co-Requisite | Compulsory |
Circuit Analysis | EEEN10121 | Co-Requisite | Compulsory |
Digital System Design I | EEEN10131 | Co-Requisite | Compulsory |
Measurements & Analytical Software | EEEN10151 | Co-Requisite | Compulsory |
Aims
This course unit aims to introduce students to the practical skills required to develop electronic hardware, including circuit design, fabrication and assembly (both electronic and mechanical), testing and fault-finding.
Learning outcomes
On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
ILO 1 - Locate and interpret a component datasheet to identify key parameter values which are required for the design of circuits. [Assessed]
ILO 2 - Locate and interpret regulations which govern the use of electronic equipment. [Assessed]
ILO 3 - Analyse circuit diagrams to plan and execute a systematic testing procedure to identify if there are faults in a circuit. [Assessed]
ILO 4 - Demonstrate how to solder through-hole components onto a Printed Circuit Board. [Assessed]
ILO 5 - Produce CAD models of printed circuit boards and mechanical components using industry standard CAD software. [Developed]
ILO 6 - Discuss the requirements of being a professional engineer with respect to local and global legal, ethical and moral frameworks. [Developed]
Teaching and learning methods
This unit is taught in the flipped style. After the initial introductory lecture, students will study the weekly material prior to the timetabled session (notes and videos) and undertake online tutorial questions on it. During the weekly session, the tutorial questions will be reviewed and covered.
The lecture material is in support of the practical labs. Students will undertake seven 3-hour labs over the course of the semester.
Assessment methods
Online exam:
This assessment takes up 40% of the overall unit.
Closed-book practical exam:
This assessment takes up 60% of the overall unit.
