BSc Management (Marketing) with Industrial/Professional Experience

Academic and Career Development is designed to provide an opportunity for students to develop academic and transferable skills that will aid them in studying management at degree level, and preparing for their career beyond University.

BMAN10780 is core for BSc Mgt/Mgt Specialism, IMABS, IM and IBFE.

BMAN10780 is core for BSc Management/Management specialisms with/without Industrial/Professional Experience, BSc International Management, BSc Information Technology Management for Business with/without Industrial Experience and BSc International Business Finance and Economics with/without Industrial/Professional Experience.

Academic and Career Development is designed to support students in their transition to University and to provide an opportunity for students to develop academic and transferable skills that will assist them in studying management at degree level, and preparing for their career beyond University. To this end it has several aims:
•    To provide students with skills, and support, which will enable them to have a smooth in transition to higher education.
•    To provide students with a sense of identity as a University of Manchester and Alliance Manchester Business School student.
•    To provide students with the knowledge to help them monitor, review, plan and take responsibility for their own learning and professional development.
•    To support students in developing the academic skills required to study management at university level.
•    To support students in developing a working relationship with their academic advisor.
•      To provide students with the opportunity to share ideas within a seminar group.
•      To support students in gaining skills necessary to make an impactful presentation.
•      To provide students with an introduction to employability, and support them in
•      To support students in developing,  and recognising,  transferable skills.

On completion of this course unit, students should be able to:

Academic and transferable skills
•    Understand themselves, their key strengths and challenges and their preferred ways of working/learning.
•    Understand what is required to produce quality writing within an academic discipline
•    Gather and analyse information from various sources
•    Integrate data and ideas into a written assignment to develop arguments based on credible, and reputable, evidence.
•      Evaluate information and its worth to an academic argument  
•    Understand academic malpractice and how to avoid it
•    Have the confidence, and skills, to enable them to contribute to group discussions.

•    Critically reflect on individual learning, performance and behaviour and demonstrate an understanding of how to manage,  and maximise,  their development.
•    Evaluate and plan their study
•    Understand what is meant by Social Responsibility (SR) and how it relates to the University of Manchester and to contemporary organisations.
•    Understand what is understood by mental well-being and know how this can be supported and developed within the University context.
 

Methods of delivery:

Blackboard: Online material,  tests and formative assessment.

Lecture hours:  15 x 1 hour lectures

Seminar hours:  8 x 1 hr seminars

An individual meeting with Academic Advisor in:
Semester 1 to discuss transition to University and formative essay plan
In semester 2 to discuss semester 1 results

Private Study: Individual and group work  77 hours (including completion of library online)

Assignment 1 Formative Essay plan
Assignment 1 Essay - 50% 
Semester 2
Assignment 2 Formative CV online test. The test needs to be completed and passed but is purely formative.
Assignment 2: Personal & Career Development Plan including Curriculum Vitae 50%  Divided into 2 parts, each of which is weighted at 25%. 

Academic advisors will provide students with informal verbal feedback throughout the course during seminars.

Written feedback via Blackboard will be provided for the formative essay plan, assessed essay, and the Personal Career and Development Plan (PCDP) including Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Online support and tests will provide students with feedback.
