Application deadline

2024 applications for this bursary are now closed.

About the bursary

The Elizabeth Moley Bursary aims to provide financial assistance and support for individuals who have received free school meals during their secondary education and wish to pursue a course based or taught in the University's School of Social Sciences. This bursary is designed to alleviate financial burdens, foster inclusivity, and facilitate access to and success at higher education for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Following the incredible gift from the Moley Family Foundation, the founding name will be in memory of alumna Elizabeth Moley (BA Administration, 1960).

For 2024, we are offering two bursaries that will provide support for the full length of the degree course.

The award

If you’re selected for the bursary and successfully register at the University, you’ll be awarded £8,000 per year for every year of your degree course.

This bursary will be paid in two instalments, in October and in February.

Eligibility criteria

For the 2024 entry application cycle, you must meet the following essential criteria to be eligible to apply for this bursary:

  • Your eligibility for Free School Meals in secondary or further education (this includes students who opted not to take the FSMs, so please indicate if you were eligible).
  • Be an offer holder, or have applied, for any course starting in September 2024 offered by our school of Social Sciences degree, or one of the courses on the joint honours list.
  • Have a household income of less than £25,000.
  • Have made an application to your regional student funding authority for income assessed UK government financial support for higher education students. The regional student funding authorities are: Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland. Make sure you’ve given consent to share the information with the University, as this helps us to determine eligibility.

Application process

You must complete the online application form to be considered for this bursary and answers must match the information you have provided on your UCAS application form. We’ll use your UCAS application and Student Finance England application to verify some of your answers. We may get in touch with you to clarify information at any point up to and including course registration.

A provisional decision will be shared with the applicant and will be dependent on meeting their offer to study, and confirmation will be made following registration.

Submit additional documents

As part of your application, you’ll need to upload additional documents to prove you have lived or studied within the stated eligible postcodes within the last three years (from September 2021 onwards). You will also need to show evidence that you have been in receipt of free school meals during your secondary and/or further education.

Students who are also eligible for the Cowrie Scholarship, Article 26 Scholarship, Raheem Sterling Scholarship, and Sadler Bursary can still apply for this award; however, if they are successfully awarded more than one of the above scholarships or bursaries as well as the Elizabeth Moley Bursary, they will only be able to receive one.
