Published as a free Open Educational Resource (OER), and the first Pressbooks open monograph published by the University of Manchester, the book examines the fast-evolving relationship between universities and language models. It argues that these tools have become commonplace without universities having fully adjusted to their presence, producing a multidimensional crisis of trust between staff and students, and a dilemma in which adapting to AI and integrating AI tend to undercut each other.

Reflecting on the publication, Mark said:

“

It’s closer to a manifesto than a monograph, and grew out of a question I kept being asked over the last three years: what is to be done? At present, the window of visibility is open. This is an issue that everyone within the university is compelled to think about and form opinions on. That will not last. It’s not too late to get this right, but time is short.

The book will be of interest to scholars, students and practitioners seeking to understand and respond to the changing role of AI in higher education.

Advancing Open Education at Manchester

This publication marks an important milestone for the Library's Imagine 2035anchor project, Flip to Open, , which has been exploring ways to reduce reliance on commercial textbooks by supporting the creation and adoption of OER. Over the next few months, the Teaching Collections team will be transitioning this project into a new service offer which aims to support teaching staff across the University to publish and adopt OER through our new OER Programme.
