Student support over the summer
Find out what student support services are available during the closure period.
We’re here to support you year-round, both on and off campus – and that includes from when the summer semester ends on Friday, 9 June 2023.
Whether you need IT help, mental health support or information on safety and halls of residence, we have the details of where to find it below.
Mental health services
We're here for you throughout the closure period, whenever you need it and whatever your concerns.
Urgent mental health support
If you’re in extreme distress and feel you may not be able to keep yourself safe, seek immediate help by visiting your nearest A&E, which will have a dedicated mental health team. Don’t hesitate to get emergency help by calling 999 if you or someone you know is in immediate risk.
The nearest local A&E unit to the University campus is Manchester Royal Infirmary, which provides urgent mental health support as well as help for injuries and medical emergencies.
You’ll find more urgent mental health support resources online.
Counselling and Mental Health Service
Our Counselling and Mental Health Service will be open throughout the summer, with one-to-one appointments and a programme of workshops and support groups available. To arrange support following the break, please get in touch.
The service will close for the August Bank Holiday (Monday, 28 August). You can still access emergency mental health support and other resources on these days. Health Assured's confidential helpline and app will also be available.
A wellbeing chat service is available to students during the summer. You can also email Student Support.
24/7 phone line
Health Assured is a 24-hour mental health support phone line and app, which means there is always someone available to offer support when you need it – whatever the time of day or night. This phone line is available in 240 languages via a translation service. Call 0800 028 3766.
Nightmail
This confidential email listening and information service is run by Greater Manchester Nightline and staffed by trained student volunteers who have a personal understanding of the student perspective.
You can email Nightmail during the summer and should receive a response within 48 hours.
Additional phone lines for crisis support
If you feel suicidal or extremely low and need to talk to someone urgently, you can ring any of the following out-of-hours services:
- Greater Manchester Mental Health 24/7 Helpline – 0800 953 0285
- The Samaritans – 116 123 or 0161 236 8000
- Papyrus – 0800 068 4141

Campus Support and Security
Campus Support and Security can provide additional help and support if you’re remaining on campus throughout the summer, and are available around the clock. Whether you need to make a report or get home safely, they should be your first port of call.
Contact Campus Support and Security on 0161 306 9966. You’ll also find this number printed on the back of your student card.
Report and Support
With the exception of weekends and the August Bank Holiday (Monday, 28 August), the Advice and Response office will be open throughout the summer.
You can report an act of sexual violence, harassment, hate crime or discrimination via the Report and Support website. Your report will be picked up and triaged and a caseworker will get back to you within two working days.
SafeZone app
If you're staying on campus over the summer, we recommend you download the SafeZone app, which is available on both Google Play and the App Store.
You can use it to contact our Campus Support and Security team directly and discreetly in an emergency or if you need first aid. You can also use the 'check-in' function to let the team know of your whereabouts for extra peace of mind.
Wellbeing services
Whether you’re at home or on campus, the summer can be a busy time, making it harder for you to make space to look after your mental wellbeing. In addition to our mental health resources, we have a few other ways to help if you need it.
Wellbeing chat
A wellbeing chat service is available to students throughout the summer. For additional help and guidance, you can also email Student Support.
Halls of residence
If you need accommodation in Manchester during June, July and August, we’re offering students the opportunity to move into our designated summer accommodation at both City and Victoria Park campus. You can find more information on this and how to apply via our accommodation services.
ResLife
Your ResLife team is available to help you 24/7 throughout the summer. You can reach the team by calling the duty ResLife Advisor number for emergency assistance.
Additional services
If you have any queries, please contact your local reception in the first instance. Reception services will be open as normal during the summer. We'll let you know by email of any unplanned changes.
In the case of an emergency, such as an electricity outage, a burst water pipe, a break-in, or if you are locked out, contact your Duty ResLife Advisor initially, or Campus Support and Security, who will assess whether a callout is required.
IT support
If you have any IT queries over the summer, IT Services are still here for you.
With the exception of August Bank Holiday (Monday, 28 August), the IT Support Centre and in-person support desks will be open as normal.
You can also use the 24/7 phoneline or support portal, and the out-of-hours service desks will deal with most IT enquiries. Please note that some requests and queries may need to be dealt with once support desks re-open.
