Five universities from three cities came together on 3–4 April 2017 for a two-day symposium in Shanghai that will foster closer ties and encourage greater collaboration.

The partnership will see researchers from Manchester joined by fellow academics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the University of Hong Kong, the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) and East China Normal University.

The symposium was organised by the University’s Professor David J Procter, Professor Henry NC Wong of CUHK and Professor Xue-Long Hou of SIOC, and featured 15 speakers addressing an audience of 50 researchers.

Manchester’s speakers included Professor Procter, Dr Jordi Bures Amat, Dr Guillaume De Bo, Professor Michael Greaney, Professor Igor Larrosa and Dr Daniele Leonori.

It is also hoped this new international alliance will encourage joint funding applications and publications, staff and student exchanges, and cooperative initiatives at undergraduate level.

Full meetings will be held every two years with the next taking place in 2019 in either Hong Kong or Manchester.
