Helping students arrive and thrive
Students from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to go to university. When they do, they often need extra support to make the most of the opportunities available to them.
Here at Manchester, one in four of our students come from low-income households. Donations give bright people from all backgrounds the opportunity to study here, and make sure all our students have access to a university experience that sets them up for future success.
Aminat's story
Growing up in Greater Manchester, Aminat passed The University of Manchester on her way to college each morning. With help from donations, she’s on track to fulfil her dream of being a solicitor.
"When I was at college, I took part in the Manchester Access Programme, which supports people from low-participation neighbourhoods into higher education. It had a big impact on me, because it showed me that I don’t have to be defined by my background. I applied to study law, and I was so proud when I found out I’d got in.
"Money was a barrier to me being able to go to university. I decided to stay living at home to save money, but travel, course equipment and day-to-day living costs all mount up.
"Receiving a scholarship, supported by donors, has made it so much easier. I use my scholarship money to pay for things like books for my course, and a bus pass to get to university. My household is very busy and loud so I spend lots of time in the library and Students’ Union!
"Coming to university with a scholarship has taught me so much. I’m determined to show the people who have helped me that they’ve made a good decision. I’ve learned about discipline, and how to set goals and stick to them. I don’t want to be another statistic.
"In the future, my ambition is to qualify as a solicitor specialising in medical negligence. I’m passionate about contributing to society and making sure people get the justice they deserve.
"To all the donors who make these scholarships possible, your efforts never go unnoticed. Meeting other scholarship recipients has made me realise that we all have our own personal reasons why we’re so grateful for this opportunity."
