Manchester innovation experts to speak at global graphene events

Innovation leaders from The University of Manchester will be sharing their lab-to-market expertise at a global graphene forum as part of a busy international programme of events in November.

James Baker, CEO of Graphene@Manchester and Ray Gibbs, Commercialisation Director based in Manchester’s Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), will be speaking at the virtual SAMPE Graphene Leadership Summit 2020.

SAMPE is the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering and is a global professional society that provides educational opportunities and promotes the latest information around advanced materials and processing technology. 

James (main picture) and Ray will be describing how the Manchester Model of Innovation, built around the commercialisation of graphene, has created a unique innovation ecosystem to fast-track the translation of research into commercial outputs.

“The SAMPE event is a great opportunity to showcase to international audiences how Manchester is approaching a tipping point in graphene commercialisation thanks to our work with major corporations, their supply chains and also with start-ups,” said James.

“Graphene is definitely a global brand and we are getting interest from across the world on what we are doing in Manchester – and in some markets like the US, we are seeing a real resurgence in interest, which is very positive.”

Transatlantic links

To help follow up on this North American interest, the Graphene@Manchester team will be leading a special webinar on materials lightweighting and functionality, principally in the aerospace and automotive sectors. The session will be hosted by the Washington State Department of Commerce on 17 November, and backed by the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry (DIT).

On the same day, Dr Arun Prakash Aranga Raju from the GEIC will be presenting a webinar entitled "Graphene and Composites: Better, Lighter, Stronger". This event is hosted jointly by The Graphene Council and the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA). For more information visit the registration site.
