Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell – President and Vice-Chancellor
Upon taking up the office of President and Vice-Chancellor in 2010, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell was the first female to lead the University and the only female Vice-Chancellor within the Russell Group.

Professor Colette Fagan is responsible for leading the University’s research strategy and doctoral training. Her own research focuses on employment, working conditions and job quality; with particular interests in gender relations and inequalities in the workplace.

Maxine Peake – British actor
The University appointed Maxine Peake as Honorary Professor of Literature and Performance earlier this year. As a RADA-trained actor, Maxine has dominated theatre, television, radio and film, drawn to tales of bold, northern women who challenge social injustice.

Jeanette Winterson OBE – Author
One of the country’s best known literary figures and author of ‘Oranges are not the only fruit’, Jeanette joined the University as Professor of Creative Writing in 2012. An author of novels, screenplays, children's books and essays, she is published in 15 languages and writes regularly for The Guardian, The Times and the New York Times.

Winnie Byanyima – Executive Director of Oxfam International
Ugandan-born University alumna Winnie Byanyima, came to the University as a refugee and left with a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering and an Honorary Doctorate. Ugmarked our Foundation Day with a lecture reflecting perfectly our world-class research and activities to address global inequalities.

Danielle George is a Professor of Radio Frequency Engineering, who specialises in radio frequency and microwave communications. She is heavily involved in the $1 billion next generation of astronomical instrument called the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

Farhana Choudhury – Undergraduate Awards
Farhana Choudhury, BA in English Language for Education, won a prestigious international award for a project inspired by the determination of women in Afghanistan and Nepal to learn. Her research paper explored the role literacy is playing in changing women’s lives in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Naomi Ogbeta – student and athlete
Naomi Ogbeta, who studies politics and quantitative methods at the University, took part in last year's triple jump final at the European Championships in Berlin. The 20-year-old is the UK’s top ranked triple jumper, after leaping to a British title in Birmingham with a personal best of 13.95m.

Letitia Budu – student and outreach advocate
Social Anthropology undergraduate Letitia is an enthusiastic advocate for The University of Manchester’s outreach work. As part of a Summer Experience Internship with the Widening Participation Team she worked on the Manchester Access Programme (MAP), which supports talented students from under-represented backgrounds to enter higher education.
