Sustainability course units and careers

We are committed to embedding sustainability into all teaching and learning as part of our wider environmental strategy.

University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL)

University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL) gives students the opportunity to incorporate sustainability course units into their degree programme.

UCIL offers students course units relating to the environment, including Climate Change and Society and Crisis of Nature: Issues in Environmental History, which they may be able to study for credit.

Our popular sustainability-focused units such as Creating a Sustainable World will be back in the academic year 2025/26 for enrolment. These units explore the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in more depth and learn how the University is contributing to them through its teaching and research.

Ethical careers

Environmental and sustainability work is an area that attracts many graduates. It encompasses a wide range of technical and non-technical jobs in industry, local and national government, and voluntary organisations.

Entry for environmental and sustainability work can be highly competitive. The University’s Careers Service provides guidance for students who are interested in an environmental career.

You can also find the University’s careers policy, which excludes tobacco companies. This policy was reviewed in 2020.
