Manchester, the original silicon valley: 75 years of modern computing

Seventy-five years ago, researchers at The University of Manchester helped create the Ferranti Mark I, the world's first commercially available computer.

This breakthrough helped transform computing from an experimental idea into a practical technology that changed the world. Today, Manchester continues to push the boundaries of computing, AI and data-driven research.

Throughout July, we will be publishing a series of articles, archive material, expert insights and contemporary research stories. This digital collection explores the people, partnerships and ideas behind the Ferranti Mark I and explores how Manchester's tradition of turning bold ideas into real-world impact continues today.

The moment computing became real: the Ferranti Mk I

In this article we explore the lasting impact of the Ferranti Mark I, tracing its evolution from the Baby via the Manchester Mark I to its final production form.
