Community engagement

We work with a range of people through our outreach activities to help develop a greater understanding of the use of animals in research.

Opportunities for students

At Manchester, we believe it’s important to share our facilities and knowledge with young people interested in scientific research.

It opened my eyes to the whole stigma surrounding animal research.

Visiting student / Year 11

We offer a unique insight of medical research to the next generation of researchers by running regular tours of our facilities for A-level students interested in studying undergraduate science degreesWhile here, they learn about the different species of animal we work with and why.

We invite zoology and anatomy students from Manchester and other higher education institutions to use our facilities in their studies. The students gain a better understanding of how our work relates to projects they could eventually be involved in, while also learning about the appropriate use of animals the ‘3Rs’ agenda to replace, reduce, and refine the use of animals in research.

We also arrange visits and work experience for veterinary students from other higher education institutions who want to get a feel for a wider research agenda.

General public

Our researchers working in dementia studies have covered animal research at numerous community events such as the University’s ‘Science Spectacular’ and ‘The Body Experience’ events. They’ve also incorporated animal research into our public engagement activities at Alzheimer's Research UK events.
