Parents and guardians
As a parent, guardian, or someone with caring responsibilities, it can be both exciting and challenging to see your child head off to university.
At Manchester, we have a dedicated team to support your child as they transition into independent living and life in the city.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions parents and carers ask.
We recommend students contact us directly if they have any issues.
Under Data Protection legislation we have a duty to protect the privacy of our students. As students are classed as adults, parents and carers become third parties. This means we cannot give out specific information about a student, including updates on their wellbeing, address or whether their rent has been paid.
If you contact us to check on the welfare of your child and they are a resident in our halls, we will contact or visit them and ask them to contact you directly. We cannot, however, compel them to do so.
If your child wants you to discuss their accommodation situation with us, they will need to provide us with explicit permission via email or telephone.

We understand that waiting for hall allocation can be stressful.
- Students with unconditional firm offers will receive their hall allocation from June onwards.
- Students with conditional offers will be allocated once their place is confirmed (e.g. after A-level results).
We work as quickly as possible, but allocation can take several weeks. Some students may hear before others. This does not affect the likelihood of being placed in one of their five preferences, though preferences are not guaranteed.
Arrivals usually take place the week before Welcome Week, giving your child time to settle in. Induction information and arrival slot booking will be sent directly to them in the weeks after their offer of accommodation has been accepted.

- Read our term dates.
Our accommodation is designed with safety in mind:
- Restricted access to buildings via key cards or keys
- 24/7 security on call
- ResLife team available out of hours to support students
The University also has the SafeZone App, which allows students to request emergency, first aid and wellbeing support.
