Finance and fees
We answer the most common questions about fees and the payment process.
Finding your fees
A summary of costs for each accommodation hall type can be found using our search tool.
Details about payment plans, whereby you can pay in instalments, can be found on individual hall pages, for example: Ashburne Hall.
Prices for the following academic year are usually advertised from April onwards.
Paying your fees
Our preferred method of payment is through Direct Debit. You can choose to pay in full or in three instalments. The instalment dates are usually in October, January and April, around the time of loan payments.
You can set up a Direct Debit through the 'My Profile' section of your My Manchester account once you arrive in Manchester and have opened a UK bank account.
If you'd like to pay in full:
- You can pay your fees online at any time through our website.
- Or you can make the payment directly to your hall administration office once you have moved in.
Useful information about payments
A Direct Debit is an electronic payment scheme operated by most banks and building societies. This form of payment allows establishments like The University of Manchester to claim money directly from bank/building society accounts on specified dates.
Please note that we can only set up Direct Debits on UK bank accounts, so international students wishing to take advantage of this facility need to open a UK bank account first.
- Direct Debits are processed on the payment date specified in the confirmation letter. If the Direct Debit is returned unpaid, the account holder will be contacted.
- you need to ensure that there are sufficient funds in your account by close of business on the last working day before the Direct Debit due date as payments may be collected at any time on the payment date. If you know there will be insufficient funds in advance, please contact the Student Services Centre who may be able to help.
- we require ten working days’ notice to amend or cancel a Direct Debit payment.
- if there is a change to the Direct Debit correspondence address, you must inform the Student Services Centre by email or in writing.
- your Direct Debit can be set up online after accepting your license agreement.
- you can set up a new Direct Debit or amend an existing Direct Debit through the My Profile section of your My Manchester account.
- you'll need to allow ten working days for any changes to be put in place.
The Advance Licence Fee payment is, in effect, money paid in advance of moving in to secure your accommodation, and it forms part of your overall accommodation payments.
This £400 payment is not a deposit or booking fee.
If you pay in instalments, it will be deducted from your first instalment. If you pay in full, it will be deducted from your total accommodation fee. This fee is refunded if, for some reason, you do not attend The University of Manchester.
