Overview
The course unit provides you with academic and practical understanding of Human Resource Practice. You will follow a curriculum which is based on employee life-cycle starting from resourcing through to human resource development, performance and reward management. You will also acquaint yourself with the HR policies that guide the implementation of HR activities
Aims
The course aims to provide the students with a theoretical and practical overview of the key areas of Human Resource (HR) practices in organisations. The course focuses on developing a critical/ academic awareness of the conceptualization and implementation of HR policy and practice, especially in the context of international development. Lectures and Tutorials explore the possibilities and problems of using HR techniques and, where possible identifying good practice in organisations in different countries. It also expects to widen students’ understanding of HRM and HRD Practices in developing countries. Studying this unit will broaden knowledge of the relationship amongst HRM concepts, policies and practices in various sectors in the society; especially in international development related contexts.
Learning outcomes
- Explain the conceptualization of HR policy and practice, especially in the context of international development. (Theoretical concepts)
- Critically evaluate theory and practice in relation to the implementation of HR in the context of international development. (Case study analysis)
- Work collaboratively with others to create a HR practice based presentation for a Tutorial based project (Group work).
- Capacity to think critically, exhibit self-awareness and take responsibility for their own learning.
- Effectively manage complex information sources, and to review, evaluate and analyse different form of literature and evidence
- Effectively present arguments in both oral and written formats [Employability]

Week 3: Talent Management (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 4: Strategic HRD (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 5: Learning and Development (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 6: Organizational Learning (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 7: Performance Management (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 8: Reward Management (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 9: HR policies (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Week 10: Competency-based HRM (3hrs Lecture/tutorials)
Teaching and learning methods
The course unit will be delivered through weekly three hours sessions incorporating presentations, small-group work, discussions and presentations during lectures/tutorials.

- Effectively present arguments in both oral and written formats.
Assessment methods
One 3500 word assignment, written on a topic of the student’s choice from a list of topics provided by the convenor/instructor. (100%)
Feedback methods
There will be many opportunities for formative feedback during questions and answer session in lectures and tutorials. Summative feedback will be provided on assessed coursework based on 3500 word assignment.
