Overview
This course offers students training in a range of advanced qualitative research methods.
Students can select three short courses in research methods training delivered by specialists from across the School of Social Sciences. Possible options include creative research methods, participant observation, the photovoice method, and a number of others.
Aims
The aim of this course is to equip students with advanced qualitative research methods training. The aims of each specific short course will vary but in general the aims will be:
- to introduce students to the principles of advanced qualitative research methods training
- to introduce the key methodological theories of advanced qualitative research methods
- to introduce the major practical techniques and approaches taken by specialists
Learning outcomes
On completion of these short courses successful students will be able to:
- understand key methodological approaches, philosophies and theories of advanced qualitative research methods from across the Social Sciences.
- understand when, where, and why to use advanced qualitative research methods in coming to design their own projects.
- understand the key practical techniques for deploying advanced qualitative research methods in their own research
Teaching and learning methods
Each short course consists of a small number of lectures and workshops, usually 2 lectures and 2 workshops.
To participate, students will need to:
- read the essential reading(s), plus one other recommended reading as listed on Reading Lists Online.
- carry out additional preparation for scheduled workshops s as specified on the Blackboard website.
- attend the lectures and participate in the workshops .
Assessment methods
Assessments will vary depending on the short course in question, but usually consist of a 1,000 word assignment.
