Academic entry qualification overview

The standard academic entry requirement for this Master's programme is a minimum Second Class UK Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant science or engineering discipline.  Please note that we consider grades achieved in key relevant modules in your undergraduate degree as well as the overall degree result.     

English language

All applicants will need to demonstrate competency in English language. Applicants who do not already possess a recognised English Language qualification, such as IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or GCSE or GCE O level English, will need to take a recognised test and attain the required English Language score:

IELTS: at least a score of 6.5 overall with three sub-tests at 6.0 or above and no sub-test less than 5.5

TOFEL (IBT): at least a score of 90 overall with no sub-test less than 22

Pearson PTE: at least a score of 58 overall with no sub-test less than 50

Pre-sessional English:   We also accept successful completion of the 10 week pre-sessional English course run by the University Language Centre at The University of Manchester to meet our English language requirements. The Department's requirement for the 10 week course is a valid IELTS score of at least 5.5 overall with no sub-test below 5.5.

Please note we do not accept the 6 or 3 week pre-sessional courses to meet our English requirements.

English language test validity

Some English Language test results are only valid for two years. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.
