This is a flexible course unit that facilitates learning of the principels of research skills, combined with conducting and reporting of empirical research in a format that suits a student's career pathway.

Option 1
Laboratory-based empirical research (60 credits)

Option 2
Non-laboratory research project in one of the following formats (60 credits):

  • Empirical study
  • Analysis of existing data
  • Qualitative study
  • Systematic review
  • Extended literature review

Option 3
Research skills in practice with Microbiology Research (30 + 30 credits):

Students will first undertake 30 credits of the Research Skills in Practice online course unit.  Each student will then complete a short research project, which may be laboratory-based, presented as a report, a short narrative review, or a short scientific literature review.


The unit aims to:

  • provide students with a unique experience of designing, conducting and reporting an independent, orginal research project
  • develop the student's ability to critically appraise published research, formulate and work with a relevant research question, understand and apply appropriate research and data-analysis methodologies
  • refine scientific writing and presentation skills

Assessment methods

Mulitple formats: dissertation, written assignment or report
