Overview

This unit will introduce you to a range of research projects using NVivo and will demonstrate how multimodal NVivo projects can be set up and aligned with a research design including their philosophical stances e.g. constructivism, critical realism.

While the practical aspect of the unit is a strong feature, it also has an important focus on critical analysis regarding the role of computer-aided qualitative research software and data interpretation. It also encourages developing a critical reflexivity within your research. The unit will further develop expertise in mixed-methods research methodologies and data visualisation.

The unit will allow you to apply a wide range of features of NVivo in the development of a project and help you to make informed decisions at every stage from, project planning to reportage.

Aims

  • Demonstrate (explain) the methods in which NVivo can be employed in qualitative and mixed-methods data analysis.
  • Manage and use multimodal methods within a project, including visuals.
  • Develop expertise and practical skills in using NVivo for qualitative/ mixed methods studies and in literature review methodology.
  • Situate the use of NVivo within wider parameters of research design and epistemology
  • Encourage rigorous and critical approaches to the visualisation of data and analysis

Teaching and learning methods

A seminar approach is adopted throughout, with a combination of lectures, online resources, group discussions and individual learning.

Knowledge and understanding

  • analyse and discuss the management of multimodal data.
  • reflect on the relationship between epistemology and knowledge production in the development of NVivo project.
  • study a range of research setting to use NVivo, including reviewing literature, analysing data etc
  • critically reflect on how literature review methodology impacts the using of NVivo as a tool to aid literature reviews and
  • organise and analyse a body of literature using Nvivo as an aid.
  • examine the theoretical and practical issues that the researcher may face in using NVivo as a research tool.
  • gain awareness of the availability a range of qualitative data analysis packages, including some that are freeware.

Intellectual skills

  • develop an ability to critically evaluate issues and developments in various computer aided software to conduct qualitative research.
  • critically evaluate analytical approaches and develop an analytical framework
  • make a reasoned argument with sound conclusion using NVivo (qualitative data analysis software).

Practical skills

  • demonstrate an ability to manage, organise and analyse, literature, data, audiovisual, images and social media discussions within NVivo.
  • plan, execute, and export reports from NVivo.
  • create visual maps as a data display.
  • create a visual poster using powerpoint

Transferable skills and personal qualities

  • gather, organise and synthesis material from a range of sources to support an argument
  • create NVivo graphics (charts, diagrams, posters) and presenting them using appropriate media for academic audience.
  • enhance critical reflexivity.
  • develop one’s identity as an analyst, including as a qualitative data analysis software users.
