Planning your next steps

There’s a lot to pack into your year (or two) of master’s study – so we have lots of support in place to help you consider your next steps from day one.

Whether you’re doing a master’s with a plan to progress to PhD study, or with a particular role in mind, or to help you stand out more generally, we will help you make your plans reality.

The most important thing is to have a plan for the year – the Careers Service has an overview of what to do, and when to do it.

If you’re planning to apply for a PhD / doctoral study

Whether or not you’re interested in a career in academia (as a lecturer / researcher), many master’s students go on to PhD study. The Careers Service will help you decide whether that’s the right path for you. There are funding deadlines throughout the year, but some are fairly early, so it pays to be prepared.

If you’re planning to apply for a job

Many master’s graduates go straight to a job – either one linked to their master’s, or a ‘graduate’ job in any discipline.

The key to success is your reason for doing a master’s, and knowing how to get this across to employers. The Careers Service has advice for how to manage the job application process as a master’s student.
