Living in Manchester as a master's student

Master’s students come from all walks of life, and where they live varies. Wherever you live, you will also have various ways to connect with other postgraduates.

We offer postgraduate-only events during Welcome Week, giving you the chance to meet other postgraduates on your course and beyond.

You can also get involved in student societies, including the mature student's group through the Students’ Union.

Moving to Manchester

Moving to a new city for your master’s can be daunting. You may be wondering about accommodation, should you live in University halls or find somewhere of your own. You may be wondering how to make new friends in such a short space of time.

Our accommodation is available to you as a postgraduate, including postgraduate-only halls. We also have a limited supply of accommodation for couples.

Families, couples and solo students can also choose to apply for accommodation through Manchester Student Homes, a free, university-run housing service for students that gives you access to accommodation available through approved landlords.

The city of Manchester is somewhere you’ll soon come to call home. It’s recently been named the UK’s most liveable city by The Economist, and one of the ten friendliest cities in the world by Rough Guides.

Whether you get involved in activities through the University or Students’ Union or get involved in local community events, you’ll find Manchester an easy place to make new friends.

Living at home/commuting

Many master’s students choose to study at Manchester because they can live with friends or family in the area, or because it is within a reasonable commute.

The Students’ Union has brought together resources to support Living at Home Students. You certainly won’t be alone if you’re living at home during your master’s, and/or commuting to campus.
