Data collection notice for The University of Manchester and the University of Melbourne for Master of Leadership for Development

This statement provides further information about how your personal information will be used by each University to manage your enquiry and if applicable your application. Enquiries from individuals who reside in Australia or New Zealand will be handled by the University of Melbourne, enquires from all other countries of residence will be handled by The University of Manchester. Applications are in the first instance submitted to the University of Melbourne.

The Master of Leadership for Development is a joint award course between the University of Melbourne and The University of Manchester (the Universities). Your personal information, such as your name, contact details and details of your enquiry, will be shared between the Universities in order to facilitate your enquiry and/or administer your application and enrolment relating to this course. The University of Manchester collects and processes personal data in accordance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 (UK) (Data Protection Act).

The collection of personal information by the University of Melbourne is governed by the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic), the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) and, to the extent it applies to our activities, the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (together, Privacy Laws). The University of Melbourne is also subject to the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) when collecting and otherwise processing the personal data of individuals located in the European Economic Area.

Both Universities are committed to protecting your privacy and processing your personal information fairly and lawfully in compliance with the Privacy Laws and the GDPR or Data Protection Act as applicable.

The lawful basis for the universities collecting personal information is for the legitimate interest of:

  • communicating with you about a course, program or event in which you have expressed interest or enrolled;
  • administering your enrolment or attendance in a course, program or event;
  • improving our products and services based on information you provide.

The University of Manchester may rely on additional legal bases for the processing of personal data relating to managing your enquiry and application such as consent; the performance of contractual obligations including preparing for a future contract (eg to manage your student experience, accommodation services and general welfare while you study at The University of Manchester; compliance with a legal obligation (eg UK equal opportunities monitoring) or the performance of tasks we carry out in the public interest.

The Universities will collect personal information directly from individuals wherever possible, however they may collect personal information indirectly in certain circumstances for specific purposes where direct collection is not practicable.

Your information will also be used for analysis, quality assurance and planning purposes, as well as to comply with legislative reporting requirements. If you consent to, or express interest in, participating in market research or receiving promotional material from the Universities, we may contact you for these purposes. You have the right to opt-out of receiving such communications at any time.

Providing your personal information is not required by law, however we may be unable to give you information about the course, program or event for which you expressed interest if the requested details are not provided.

The information you provide will be used by authorised staff and contracted service providers for the purpose for which it was collected. It will not be transferred outside Australia unless to an entity operating under equivalent privacy obligations. The Universities take all reasonable steps to ensure that the information we hold is accurate and complete and that appropriate technical and organisational measures are implemented and maintained to protect it from accidental or unlawful destruction, misuse, loss, alteration, or unauthorised access or disclosure.

We will only retain your personal information for as long as required for the purpose it was collected and in accordance with our legislative obligations. This information is then securely destroyed in accordance with the University of Melbourne’s retention and disposal authority and The University of Manchester’s records retention schedule (pdf).

We will not disclose your personal information to anybody else unless you have given consent, or we are authorised or required to do so by law.

You may request access to, or correction of, your personal information held by either of the Universities, withdraw your consent (if information is processed on the basis of consent), or exercise data subject rights under the GDPR, if applicable, by contacting us at dataprotection@manchester.ac.uk (The University of Manchester) or continuing-education@unimelb.edu.au (the University of Melbourne).
