Overview
The introduction to Clinical Immunology unit aims to provide students with an overview of immunity and the principles and practice of Clinical Immunology. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of the basic principles of the immune system and the types of immune response that can be generated. Students will also be introduced to the main categories of immune disorders that are investigated in the clinical laboratory and an understanding of the clinical immunology as a healthcare discipline.
Aims
Through studying and applying the taught content in this Unit, students will be able to:
- Discuss the functions of the immune system in health and in the protection against infection.
- Compare and contrast the roles and co-dependence of the innate immune system and the adaptive immune response.
- Explain the function of the major cells of the immune system.
- Explain the function of the major humoral components of the immune response.
- Define the principle categorisation of disorders of the immune system.
