Other eligibility criteria
This award is available to existing postgraduate students.
Current students who have already accepted an offer of a full scholarship for September 2025 entry are ineligible to apply.
PhD students who have already received the Sasakawa studentship may be nominated again, and receive the studentship for up to three years, through repeated awards cannot be guaranteed.

Interested applicants should contact Dr Peter Cave (peter.cave@manchester.ac.uk) for the application form, which should be returned to Dr Cave by 5pm GMT by Friday 28 February 2025.
Additional documentation
Your full online application must include:
- A 1500 word PhD research proposal
- A copy of your Bachelor's and Master's academic transcript and certificate. If your Master's degree is pending, please provide an interim transcript.
- An up-to-date academic CV summarising your academic record, employment history, publications and highlighting experience demonstrating your research potential.
- The names of two academic referees, including one from your most recent institution. Your referees will be contacted directly via the Referee Portal following the submission of your application form.
- A certificate or evidence demonstrating your English language ability and proficiency.

Applicants must submit the online application for a place on PhD Japanese Studies in the School by 13 January 2025 at the latest. All supporting documentation, including references, must be submitted by that date.
Please submit the completed Sasakawa Funding Application Form by 5pm GMT, Friday 28 February 2025, at the latest. Please note that this is a strict deadline and applications received after 5pm will not be included in the competition.
Decision date
End of June 2025.
