The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures is the greatest concentration of high-quality research and teaching in language-based disciplines in the UK.

We are united by a common research interest: the study of languages and their application in linguistics, translation studies and cultural studies, including:

  • Literature
  • Screen studies
  • Critical theory
  • Historical, political and social studies

The University of Manchester is one of the pre-eminent centres in the country for research in European languages and cultures, including cultures outside Europe where those languages are spoken.

Our research interests include literary study in all its forms and over all historical periods from the Middle Ages onwards, as well as performance and film studies and women's writing, with a strong element of literary, cultural and feminist theory.

Cross-disciplinary areas of research expertise include the Holocaust and post-colonial and diaspora cultures along with issues relating culture to history and politics.
