Whether you want to join a sports club to make new friends or are looking to compete at the highest level – we have something for everyone.

Staying active

Taking part in sport gives you the chance to develop your teamwork skills, make new friends and enjoy some downtime between studying.

You can get involved in a number of different ways, including:

  • exploring a range of activities for beginners through the Sporticipate programme; 
  • using the local sports facilities, with discounted rates for students, including three fitness suites, two 50-metre swimming pools, indoor courts and outdoor pitches; 
  • enjoying a whole city of sport, including the National Cycling Centre, regional tennis and athletics centres and a national squash centre.

Ways to get involved

Sport scholarships

Our Sport Manchester Scholarship is awarded to high performing athletes to help you excel at all aspects of your life, balancing demanding training schedules with study. It offers personalised support tailored to you, along with financial backing.

You might also be eligible to apply for the government-funded Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) – we are the north-west’s lead site.

Manchester is a proud sports hub with a whole range of facilities, from plenty of football pitches and pools, countless courts and cages, and sprawling stadiums and sports halls.

Armitage Sports Centre

Located in the heart of the Fallowfield campus, this convenient sports hub is home to many of the University’s sports clubs and community teams. There you will find:

  • a double indoor sports hall;
  • an air-conditioned fitness suite with free weights area;
  • outdoor multi-use courts;
  • floodlit 3G five-a-side football pitches;
  • two full-sized floodlight artificial turf pitches;
  • six grass pitches.

Sugden Sports Centre

Just off Oxford Road, this is the perfect place to head during your days on campus with a wide range of activities available, including if you’re on a budget. There are:

  • two double-sized sports halls, hosting regular sessions for badminton, netball, basketball;
  • an outdoor 3G five-a-side pitch;  
  • an air-conditioned fitness suite and free weights area; 
  • six squash courts;
  • multi-activity rooms.

Manchester Aquatics Centre

Built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, this top-of-the-range pool and gym is of Olympic standard and the perfect place to push yourself. Facilities include:

  • two 50-metre swimming pools;
  • a diving pool;
  • three high-quality gyms; 
  • a health suite;
  • sauna, steam room and spa.

Wythenshawe Sports Ground

A first-class sports ground with a high-quality pavilion that boasts clean and spacious amenities for team games or tournaments. Here you will find:

  • 11 vs 11 pitches; 
  • 7 vs 7 pitches;  
  • a 9 vs 9 pitch;  
  • a rugby pitch; 
  • plenty of spectating space;  
  • communal and private changing rooms, and event refreshments on site.

University Boat House

A 20-minute cycle from the Fallowfield campus, all four University boat clubs can train at the same time across the Bridgewater Canal. You will find:

  • access to a 12km stretch of the Bridgewater Canal; 
  • boat storage;  
  • changing and shower facilities;
  • bike storage and car parking.
