Meeting people and settling in
It’s easy to make friends at university, but we understand it’s something you may be worried about before you arrive. This is perfectly natural.
- Belonging – with such an international community and vibrant mix of people, there are many groups and societies to get involved it to help you integrate into Manchester life.
- Daily life – settling into student life is unique for everyone and you'll soon find your rhythm and meet loads of new people as you go.
Hear from our current students as they share their own stories of starting at Manchester, fitting in and university life, and pass on what they’ve learnt.

How to get involved
- Welcome Week – get involved in the events and activities, to help you settle in and meet new people.
- Accommodation communities – living in halls is a great way to connect with other students. Many halls organise social events and activities.
- Societies and clubs – with hundreds to choose from, you can easily find people who share your interests.
- Go your own way – if you don’t find a society or club you love among our existing ones, you can form your own!
- International vibe – our student community is made up of people from 170 different countries, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to meet up.
Our campus community
We create a sense of belonging here through our diverse and inclusive community initiatives on campus, including:
- Student societies and clubs – join one of the 400 societies/clubs and find like-minded people and explore new interests.
- Community events – there are regular events, from cultural festivals to sports tournaments, that bring students together and help build our strong sense of community.
- Sustainable campus – our commitment to sustainability ensures we promote a healthy environment, with green spaces and eco-friendly practices.

The sense of community here is unbeatable — it’s like everyone’s got each other’s backs.

Religion, faith and culture
We have a diverse community with a mix of beliefs, faiths and cultures and we recognise this is an important part of many students' lives.
There are chaplaincy centres, prayer rooms and dedicated religious clubs and societies within the Students' Union.
