In Human Anatomy and Histology you will focus on the alimentary and urinary systems, learning about the structure and the pathologies that may occur in these systems. In addition to lectures, you will gain practical experience of the overall structure of these organ systems and of their components by working with prosections, models and histological specimens in the dissecting room. The dissecting room sessions are designed to complement the lecture course.

The aims are to integrate anatomy and histology of the human alimentary and urinary systems with clinical topics.
• Understand the anatomy of the alimentary and urinary systems
• Understand the structural arrangement of the abdomen and its contents
• Understand the structural arrangement of the pelvis and its contents
• Understand the histological arrangement of all of the above structures
• Relate the structural anatomy to pathological processes that may occur
Anatomy and histology of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, the musculature of the anterior and posterior abdominal walls, composition of the pelvis and anatomy and histology of the genitourinary tract are covered in detail.
Task 1: solve a clinical case using anatomical knowledge.
Task 2: critically analyse a paper from a well-known anatomical journal and produce a written summary.
Task 3: production of a group presentation on a pre-determined anatomical/pathological topic.
All e-learning nodes are carried out in groups and all have an element of peer assessment which will count towards the final mark awarded for each node. Students are expected to use group specific discussion boards and chat rooms to complete each task.

- Three e-learning tasks where students have to work in their groups to produce the final assessed piece of work.
- Each group elects a leader whose task it is to steer the group in the right direction and submit the final assessed piece of work.
- Project management
- All members of the group must keep an eye on the progress of the group and the task.
- Oral communication
- Production of presentation on a pre-determined anatomical topic. Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions during lectures.
- Problem solving
- The 1st e-learning task leads the students through a series of questions/clues to enable them to work out the diagnosis of the patient they are presented with.
- Students have to link the anatomical sections they see to physiology and pathology. They have to read a research article and provide a written critique of it. They must research a topic to produce the group slide presentation.
- Written communication
- Groups assessed on 1 piece of writing (as a group) and production of 1 slide presentation. They have to communicate with each other using group specific discussion boards and chat rooms.
- Develops organisational skills.
2 hour written examination (85%): students are required to answer 1 essay question from each of the three sections on the paper. Three eLearning modules to complete (15%).
Feedback given via blackboard on completion of the 3 eLearning nodes. Formative question bank available on blackboard for students to check their learning (not assessed). Written and verbal feedback provided on practise exam question during lectures. Three interactive sessions provide feedback to enable students to gauge understanding and depth of their current knowledge.
