Overview

  • The language, history and discourses of inclusion internationally
  • National policy approaches to inclusion
  • Inclusion and successful whole school approaches to diversity
  • Parental involvement in successful learning
  • The role of advocacy and consumer groups in promoting inclusive education

Aims

  • Introduce students to the current issues discourses and policies that surround inclusive education
  • Familiarize students with strategies to support the learning of students with varied abilities and from diverse backgrounds
  • Study frameworks for responding to inclusive education, including SEN issues

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

  • analyse and discuss the social and legislative aspects of the area of inclusion and its general implications for whole school approaches
  • reflect on the discourses of disability and their impact on understandings of inclusive practice
  • study a range of educational settings, including early years, primary, secondary, higher education and lifelong learning
  • examine the theoretical and practical issues of the role of parents and carers in the provision of inclusive education

Intellectual skills

  • develop an ability to critically evaluate issues and developments in inclusive education

Practical skills

  • demonstrate an ability to construct a clear argument
  • construct an effective presentation

Transferable skills ans transferable qualities

  • assemble evidence from a range of sources to support an argument.

Teaching and learning methods

A seminar approach is adopted throughout, with a combination of lectures, group discussions and individual learning.
